Mark Hamill said he thought something about the return of the Jedi was too predictable. The third part of the original trilogy has proved controversial over the years. Compared to what followed, however, it is still considered one of the best Star Wars franchises. The Ewoks were one of the big problems many people had at that time, with a rather dramatic tone of The Empire Strikes Back, which is really sinister compared to what followed.
In a new interview promoting the film What We Do in the Shadow, Mark Hamill talked about the return of the Jedi and a problem he had during shooting. All three parts of the original trilogy underwent major changes, but Hamill wanted to make the framework even broader. George Lucas disagreed and should have reminded Hamill of what a Star Wars concession is, explains Hamill.
POWERFUL: Leia trained with Yoda and Obi-Wan, but she wasn’t Jedi Master
. I remember complaining to George [Lucas] about something in the Jedi revenge. And I said: It’s so predictable and pathetic, and it is: Mark, don’t forget. These things are made for children. His original intention was to make films for, you know, kids! Teenagers and youngsters. And we bring in our adult feelings, and that’s where we’re wrong.
What Mark Hamill found so predictable had something to do with Luke Skywalker’s historic bow. Hamill had some preconceived ideas about where the character should be at that time after playing him in two movies, but George Lucas eventually took the lead and concentrated on being straightforward. What Hamill was trying to say is that he wants to change the Jedi’s return…
I thought I was going crazy. Because I was completely dressed in black. I thought I’d go to the dark side last time. And, of course, you need to rehabilitate yourself. But this movie is what I felt in the previous episode. But every actor wants to play his evil twin.
After all, Mark Hamill almost got his wish with Ryan Johnson’s Last Jedi. Although Luke didn’t look on the dark side, he did something completely unpredictable. Ironically, Hamill didn’t like the way Luke Skywalker was portrayed in the rest of the trilogy, although he regrets having said so in public. It all comes down to George Lucas in the end. Read what Hamill said about Lucas and complete the first trilogy below.
It’s him. It’s him. He knows what he wants, and I realized he was right. He said: In the end, all fairy tales are perfectly connected. Because I thought we really had to go crazy after the Empire with the last one, but there’s a reason why George is where he is and I am where I am.
The Last Jedi could well be the most controversial film of the Star Wars series. The Return of the Jedi still gets mixed reviews from hardcore fans, but it’s part of the original trilogy, and it was the last for almost two decades. Nobody knew what was going to happen except George Lucas, who always wanted to make precursors. You can watch the part of Mark Hamill’s interview below on the Sirius XM channel on YouTube.
